Center of excellence for people, leadership & crisis resilience

The standard is the same whether you are in rotterdam or in willemstad.

The 1for2 Center of Excellence is not a building. It is a standard: a way of governing knowledge, maintaining quality, and working with people that holds whether you are in Rotterdam or in Willemstad.

Over 25 years, 1for2 Social Innovation has developed an integrated approach to people, leadership, and crisis resilience from its base in Rotterdam. The accreditations, the methodology, the peer networks, the confidential counseling certification. These were built through decades of real work inside organizations, leadership conflicts, integrity crises, and high-stakes human situations. That base is established. It is not moving.

What is expanding is the reach. The same standard, the same methodology, the same commitment to “Attention is our Craft” is now being applied in the Caribbean, not imported as a foreign product, but grown from roots that were always already there.

Two homes, one network

Kirsten Heukels, founder of 1for2, grew up partly in Curaçao. She attended high school there. She knows what it means to be part of a small-island community, where professional and personal worlds are close together, where trust is built in person and over time, where the social texture of daily life shapes how organizations function. That knowledge did not come from research. It came from living there.

When COVID-19 hit in March 2020, 1for2 pivoted to online delivery within days. The afternoon Essential Skills sessions, run in collaboration with the Dutch Accountancy Organization (NBA), drew unexpected participation from Curaçao-based professionals joining from their mornings. What emerged was a community of practice that crossed an ocean. When restrictions lifted and physical travel resumed in 2022, that community asked for something more: presence. Real visits. Live sessions. A relationship, not a webinar.

Two visits per year, March/April and October/November, have since established a working rhythm. Curaçao is the hub. Participation extends to Bonaire, Suriname, Sint Eustatius, Sint Maarten, and increasingly to Jamaica, Anguilla, and the wider island region.

What a center of excellence means here

In practice, the COE means three things operating together:

A standard for professional development quality. The Caribbean deserves the same rigorous, accredited, human-centered professional development that organizations in the Netherlands access. Not a simplified version. Not a regional adaptation that lowers the bar. The same standard, delivered in context, with people who understand the regional dynamics.

A home for local professional growth. Strong trainers and coaches exist across the Caribbean. The structural problem is that training alone cannot sustain a career on a small island. The COE creates conditions for those professionals to build, to earn, and to grow, in collaboration with 1for2, not in competition with it. Earn-in models for local talent are part of the offer from the start.

A long-term transfer of ownership. What begins as a Dutch initiative with Caribbean roots is designed to become a Caribbean organization. The goal is not to maintain a Rotterdam presence in the region indefinitely. It is to build the capability, the community, and the institutional strength for the Center to be genuinely locally owned and locally led. That transition is the ambition. Everything we do now is oriented toward it.

Countering brain drain by raising the stakes

Small-island economies face a structural talent challenge. Higher-educated professionals leave, not because they want to, but because the career development opportunities available locally cannot match what exists elsewhere. When people can access quality coaching, recognized accreditations, peer networks, and meaningful professional communities at home, the calculus changes. The COE is one part of changing that calculus.

The full offer, in regional context

Through the Caribbean Center of Excellence, 1for2 brings its complete professional portfolio to the region: Essential Skills training for professional associations, corporate teams, and government bodies; executive coaching for senior leaders and management teams; certified confidential counseling for organizations navigating integrity and workplace issues; crisis management and negotiation training; behavioral profiling and BrainCompass diagnostics; and leadership development tailored to small-island governance and organizational dynamics.

All of it backed by 25 years of established practice, internationally recognized accreditation, and a genuine commitment to the people and organizations we work with.
